Abia State Labour Party Chairman, Mr. Ceekay Igara, has emphatically countered the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by asserting that the Labour Party holds the majority in the 8th Abia House of Assembly and should be entitled to the majority leadership.
In an exclusive interview with Newsmen, Igara clarified that while the PDP has 11 House members, the Labour Party, with its 10 members, gains an advantage through its collaboration with two House members of the Young Progressive Party (YPP) and one member from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Assembly.
The cooperation between the Labour Party, YPP, and APC resulted in the election of Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, a member of the Labour Party, as the Speaker of the House. According to Igara, this understanding implies that the Labour Party should retain the majority leadership in the House.\

“Our agreement was to work together because we wanted a change in the system, and based on that change, we were able to elect a Speaker from the Labour Party. With the addition of the 3 members from YPP and APC to our 10, we have a total of 13, while PDP has 11 members. Hence, during any House election, we have the majority, and that is the greatest problem for the PDP,” the Labour Party Chairman maintained.
Igara attributed the ongoing drama in the Assembly to the PDP’s inability to accept the reality of their defeat by the Labour Party in the state. He claimed that the PDP is still grappling with the experience of being in the opposition.
Regarding the suspension of Hon. Solomon Akpulonu, the PDP member representing Obingwa East State Constituency, Igara clarified that it was a control measure to demonstrate that the House operates with order and to serve as a deterrent to others who might contemplate disrupting the peace within the Assembly.
The situation remains tense as both parties assert their claims to the majority leadership in the Abia House of Assembly. As the political landscape continues to evolve, observers are closely monitoring how the matter will be resolved and its impact on the state’s political dynamics.
