The 2023 Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Umuahia, Abia State, has made a deduction in the window period for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate, Chief Okey Ahiwe, to present their witnesses.
The tribunal is currently hearing a suit contesting the outcome of the March 11, 2023, election, which resulted in Dr. Alex Otti of the Labour Party being declared the Executive Governor of Abia State.
During the pre-hearing on Thursday, July 27, the prosecuting counsel, C.A.N. Nwokeukwu, SAN, presented some documents as evidence, but he failed to present the remaining witnesses as planned. On the previous day, Nwokeukwu had fielded three witnesses and requested an adjournment, citing security reasons.
The counsel then requested another adjournment to Tuesday, August 1, 2023, to prepare and subpoena the remaining witnesses. Nwokeukwu explained that these witnesses had not been served yet, but arrangements had been made with the bailiff for service.
However, the tribunal chairman, Justice H.T.D. Gwadah, questioned the counsel about the four witnesses scheduled to be presented at the last sitting but not brought forward.
The ongoing tribunal proceedings indicate the intensity and significance of the case, which seeks to challenge the election results. As the hearing continues, both parties involved will have the opportunity to present their arguments and evidence before the tribunal reaches a final decision on the matter.
