Alef Aeronautics, a pioneering company in the field of flying cars, announced in a news release that it has obtained a special airworthiness certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This significant achievement grants Alef Aeronautics the authorization to conduct road and air testing of their innovative vehicle. The certification marks a crucial milestone for the company as it paves the way for the future of personal transportation.
According to Alef’s website, their flagship product, the “Model A” car, is a fully electric vehicle that also offers a hydrogen option at a higher price point. It is designed as a low-speed vehicle suitable for public roads, capable of covering up to 200 miles on a single charge and easily fitting into a standard garage. However, what sets it apart is its unique ability to vertically take off and fly, with a maximum range of 110 miles.
Alef Aeronautics describes the “Model A” as a vehicle that can effortlessly navigate above obstacles until it reaches the desired destination. Its cabin and driver remain stable thanks to a distinctive gimbaled rotating cabin design, providing an exceptional flying experience.
The FAA, as confirmed by an agency spokesperson to Fox Business, issued a Special Airworthiness Certificate for Alef Aeronautics’ “Model Zero” aircraft on June 12, 2023. This certification grants limited purposes for the aircraft, including exhibition, research, and development. It is worth noting that this is not the first time the FAA has issued a Special Airworthiness Certificate for an aircraft of this kind, highlighting the FAA’s ongoing efforts to adapt to technological advancements.
Alef Aeronautics introduced the flying car to the public in October of last year, garnering substantial interest from individuals and businesses, resulting in a considerable number of preorders. The company’s CEO, Jim Dukhovny, expressed his excitement about the FAA certification, emphasizing the significance of this achievement for Alef Aeronautics’ vision.
As the news spread, Alef Aeronautics updated its website to announce that the flying car is now available for preorder. The Santa Clara, California-based company informed potential customers that the vehicle, capable of carrying one or two occupants, will be priced at approximately $300,000.
In their press release, Alef Aeronautics reiterated that the “Model A” is entirely electric and street-legal, boasting vertical takeoff and landing capabilities. As a Low-Speed Vehicle, it adheres to a maximum speed limit of around 25 miles per hour on paved surfaces. However, if a driver requires a faster route, they can utilize the vehicle’s flight capabilities, granting them the freedom to overcome traffic and reach their destination swiftly.
As of Friday, interested customers could secure a place on the waiting list by placing a $150 deposit. Alternatively, for those seeking priority access, a $1,500 payment would grant them a spot higher up the list’s queue, ensuring their place in line to own this groundbreaking mode of transportation.
