In an ambush by alleged armed Fulani herders in Anune town in Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State, a police officer and two other mourners were taken hostage.
According to a local source, the victims were kidnapped Tuesday night while they were travelling back to Makurdi from a funeral service in Naka, the seat of the state’s Gwer West Local Government.
The event happened five months after the armed herders ambushed the route and killed the DPO in charge of Naka’s division along with six other people.
“On Monday, we lost one notable individual, and the body was scheduled to be carried home for burial on Monday. And on Tuesday, as usual, the populace showed up and attacked the car carrying the mourners. Some of the victims were taken into the jungle, but security personnel were pursuing them.
They have since been transported to Naka police station in the vehicle they were riding in prior to the attack. It is regrettable that the armed herdsmen keep that close to Anune.
“A police officer and two other people were kidnapped by them. The police officer’s ransom demand is already N200,000, the woman’s is N1,000,000, and another person’s is N500,000.
When contacted, Catherine Anene, the public relations officer for the Benue State Police Command, stated that she had not yet received information about the incident.
