Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the indefinite suspension of Mr. AbdulRasheed Bawa, as the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The suspension was announced in a statement by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, on Wednesday, June 14.
The statement said that Bawa’s suspension was to allow for proper investigation into his conduct while in office. The statement did not specify the allegations against Bawa, but it said that they were “weighty” and “warranted his suspension.”
Bawa has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Director of Operations in the Commission, who will oversee the affairs of the Office of the Chairman of the Commission pending the conclusion of the investigation.
The EFCC chair was appointed as the Chairman of the EFCC in February 2021. He was the youngest person to ever be appointed to the position. Bawa is a graduate of the University of Maiduguri and the Nigerian Law School. He has also worked as a prosecutor with the EFCC.
