Two individuals were fatally shot on Wednesday when a cadet allegedly opened fire on members of his own unit at a military training center in central Japan, according to the country’s Ground Self-Defense Force (SDF) . The incident occurred during a live-fire training exercise, leaving several others wounded. The cadet has been apprehended, and authorities are working to determine the motive behind the shooting.
Cadet Opens Fire at Training Center
The shooting took place at approximately 9 a.m. in Hino City, located in the central Japanese prefecture of Gifu, as stated by Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno. The Gifu Naka police station confirmed that two servicemen, aged 25 and 52, lost their lives in the incident. Another 25-year-old individual from the same garrison sustained injuries.
During a televised press conference, the SDF’s Chief of Staff, Yasunori Morishita, expressed his dismay, stating, “This kind of incident should never happen in an organization that handles weapons.” He announced the formation of an investigation committee to examine the incident and implement measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
