In a disappointing defeat to Columbia in the ongoing Women’s world cup, south Korea made history in the 77th minute when manager Colin Wryly introduced Casey Phair into the game as a substitution aged 16 years 26 days during the 2-0 loss at the Sydney football stadium.
Speaking after the game, the manager says “ At Least we made one bit of history today”. The game saw Casey Phair become the youngest player ever at a World Cup,male or female.
She beat the former owner of the record who happens to be a Nigerian,Ifeanyi chiejine who was 16yrs and 34days old when she played that the 1999 World cup. The Men’s record at the world cup was in the hands of a Northern Ireland Norman Whiteside who was 17yrs and 40days old when he played against Yugoslavia in 1982.
Casey Phair had scored five goals for her country after earning two caps in the under 17s hence her chance to the National team for the world Cup. The manager Said “ she’s been great in camp. It is difficult for a player to come on at any age at 2-0 down to make an impact but I wanted to throw her in to give her that experience and as a signal to everyone in our squad that these kinds of players are the future.
Casey Phair who plays academy football in the United States has now had her chance to sow herself as they’ve been lots of hype around particularly on her qualities on the ball.
