The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) has urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other emergency management agencies to be inclusive of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in their response and measures to reduce disasters.
According to the CCD, disaster is always inclusive and does not discriminate. When it occurs, it disproportionately affects persons with disabilities and their families in vulnerable situations. The group is calling on NEMA, state agencies, and partners in emergency management to take appropriate steps to identify PWDs and ensure their inclusion in the planning for support to flood survivors and displaced persons.
This call to action comes at a crucial time as Nigeria faces increasing risks from natural disasters such as floods. The CCD is urging emergency management agencies to take proactive measures to ensure that PWDs are not left behind in disaster response efforts.
