According to outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte, the fall of the Dutch government was caused by a disagreement over asylum policies among the parties that comprise the coalition. On Friday, following crisis discussions with Rutte serving as the meeting’s chair, the four parties were unable to come to an agreement. Despite the fact that the current government was formed around a year and a half ago, the parties have been at war over migration concerns for a long time. Reports from the local media indicate that fresh elections will most likely take place in the month of November.

Following the uproar that erupted a year ago regarding overcrowded migrant facilities, Rutte’s conservative VVD party has been making efforts to limit the number of people seeking asylum in the Netherlands. However, his junior coalition members resisted his plans, which was a challenge for him. During a news conference on Friday evening, immediately following an emergency meeting of the cabinet, Dutch PM Rutte announced that the government had failed. He said that he would present King Willem-Alexander with his resignation on Saturday. Despite this, Rutte stated that the ministers would carry on with their responsibilities as caretaker administrations until the new elections are held.

The number of asylum requests submitted to the Netherlands increased by more than one-third in 2018, topping 47,000, and estimations provided by the government projected that there will be over 70,000 applications in 2023. This week, Rutte attempted to gain approval for a plan that would restrict the number of relatives of refugees admitted into the nation to a maximum of 200 per month. On the other hand, his junior coalition allies, the Christian Union and the socially liberal D66, were adamantly against this proposal.

During the time that he was breaking the news of the resignation of his cabinet, Rutte admitted, “The decision was very difficult for us.” He added that the coalition members’ divergent perspectives on migration were “irreconcilable” and that despite their efforts to find a solution, the division remained insurmountable. Despite their efforts, he said, they were unable to find a compromise. The “emergency brake,” a compromise proposal that would have triggered limitations only in the event of an unusually high intake of migrants, was not enough to save the government from collapse.

The spokesperson for the Christian Union, Tim Kuijsten, made the following statement: “The four parties determined that they cannot reach an agreement on migration. As a result, they came to the conclusion that this government should be removed.”

Who is Rutte?

He has held the position of the Dutch Prime Minister continuously since 2010, making him the leader with the longest tenure to date. The development of far-right parties like Geert Wilders’ PVV has put him under increasing pressure to find solutions to problems relating to migration.

The Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB), which had grown to be the largest party in the upper house of parliament after a stunning election victory in March, declared that it would not take part in any subsequent Rutte administration. This result made the BBB the largest party in the Dutch upper house.
