Elon Musk, the visionary CEO of Tesla, has announced the formation of a new artificial intelligence startup called xAI. The company’s website states that its goal is to “understand the true nature of the universe,” and the new firm will host a Twitter Spaces chat on Friday to reveal further details about its aims.
Musk has previously expressed concerns about the development of AI, stating that he believes it should be paused and that the sector needs regulation. He said that xAI was created to “understand reality,” but it is currently unclear how much funding the entity has, what its specific objectives are, or what kind of artificial intelligence the company wants to focus on.
The announcement has generated excitement in the tech industry, as Musk is known for his innovative ideas and successful ventures. Many are eagerly awaiting more information about xAI and its plans for the future.
Musk was one of the original backers of OpenAI, which went on to create the popular large language model ChatGPT. However, his relationship with the company has soured, and he has criticized ChatGPT for having a liberal bias. He also disagrees with how ChatGPT has been run and its close relationship with Microsoft.
In March, Musk signed an open letter calling for a pause on “Giant AI Experiments,” which has around 33,000 signatures to date. In an interview with the BBC in April, Musk said he had been worrying about AI safety for over a decade. “I think there should be a regulatory body established for overseeing AI to make sure that it does not present a danger to the public,” he said.
With xAI, Musk is once again pushing the boundaries of technology and taking on new challenges.
