England Qualifies for World Cup Quarterfinals
Nigeria, despite their dominance, was defeated by a team that rode its luck and ended up with only 10 players after losing Lauren James to a red card.
In the last 16 of the Women’s World Cup, England beat Nigeria on a penalty kick by Chloe Kelly. The game ended in a 0-0 draw after 120 daunting minutes.
Beth England, Rachel Daly, and Alex Greenwood also scored for the European winners, who had a player sent off in the first half of Monday’s game.
After England’s forward Lauren James, who had scored three goals in the group stage and was their top scorer, was sent off in the 87th minute for an angry stamp on Michelle Alonzi’s back after the two got mixed up, England had to play extra time with only 10 players.
On Saturday, the fourth-ranked English team will play either Jamaica or Colombia in the quarterfinals in Sydney.
