Erling Haaland of Norway, Aitana Bonmati of Barcelona Femeni, and Sophia Smith of the United States Women’s National Team all lost out to Messi for the prize.
In addition to winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Messi had a standout year, scoring seven goals and dishing out three assists in just seven games to win player of the Tournament honors.
He also won the best Championship performance category at the ESPY Awards, according to ESPN.com. He was beaten out for the Best Athlete title by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, though.
During the summer transfer period, Messi joined Major League Soccer club Inter Miami.
In 32 games for Paris Saint-Germain in the French Ligue 1 last year, Messi scored 16 goals and contributed 16 assists.
With 85 points after 38 games in the French League, Paris Saint-Germain took first place.
