FACT CHECK: Who Is The Acting Chairman Of EFCC

On Wednesday, June 14, Bola Tinubu suspended Abdulrasheed Bawa, chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Mr Tinubu issued the suspension via a statement released by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Conflicting reports

Following the suspension of Bawa, a section of the mainstream media reported Mohammed Umar Abba is now the acting Chairman of EFCC.

This was first published by PUNCH newspaper before other platforms like Vanguard, PM News, This Day followed suit.

A quick check by Parallel Facts shows that the post has been taken down by PUNCH and Vanguard respectively while PM News still has the story on their site at the time of filing this report.



Findings by Parallel Facts, however, revealed Mohammed Umar Abba is not the acting Chairman of EFCC as widely reported. He only acted as Chairman in 2020-2021 as obtained from the agency’s website. He was also the Director of Operation (DoP) during the erstwhile EFCC boss Ibrahim Magu’s tenure in 2017, a position he held till 2020 when he took over from the latter as acting Chairman. He acted in acting capacity till he returned to the Police. In 2019, he was promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Police and currently the DCP SCID, Kano.


According to the statement signed for Tinubu by Willie Bassey, OSGF spokesperson, AbdulKarim Chukkol is the official Acting Chairman of EFCC.

“Mr Bawa has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the director, operations in the commission (Chukkol), who will oversee the affairs of the office of the chairman of the commission pending the conclusion of the investigation,” the statement said.

Prior to his recent appointment, Chukkol is the Director of Operations of the Commission.

He was one of the young officers elevated following the appointment of Bawa over a year and a half ago.

Chukkol earned a degree from the University of Maiduguri in 2000 and has attended various training such as FBI National Academy in Quantico in 2011.

The acting EFCC boss also attended the University of Virginia Postgraduate Diploma in Criminal 


The report that Mohammed Umar Abba is now the acting Chairman of EFCC is false and misleading.
