Former Nigerian Olympian Boxer, Jeremiah Okorodudu, Dies at 64, Corpse Held Hostage

Former Nigerian boxer Jeremiah ‘Jerry’ Okorodudu passed away on Wednesday night at a private hospital in Lawandon, Lagos. He had been battling a foot ulcer that had left him bedridden for weeks. The news of his death was confirmed by his wife, Adenike Okorodudu, who spoke to The Punch.

However, the hospital has refused to release Okorodudu’s corpse until the outstanding N600,000 medical bill is paid. “He is dead now, but we still need to pay N600,000 to get his body out of the hospital,” Adenike told The Punch.

Okorodudu represented Nigeria at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, where he competed in the middleweight category. He was also a gold medalist at the Oluyole 1979 National Sports Festival in Ibadan.

The boxing community has expressed their condolences and sadness at the news of Okorodudu’s passing. Secretary-General of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control and President of the West Africa Boxing Union, Remi Aboderin, confirmed the news and said, “It is unfortunate that he died this way, and I am actually lost for words. May his soul rest in peace.”
