Enyinnaya Abaribe, the lawmaker representing Abia South senatorial district, has said most Igbos did not vote for Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi in the 2023 general elections based on tribalism but rather supported him because he was the most competent among all the candidates who contested in the February 25 poll.
The former Senate Minority Leader made the clarification in a recent interview on Signature TV.
“No, Igbos didn’t vote for him (Peter Obi) because he was Igbo; they voted for him because they saw him as the best candidate.
“I am open to challenges from anyone. This is why his appeal extended beyond the Igbo community and resonated nationwide,” he replied when questioned about whether Igbos voted for Obi solely based on tribalism.
Obi is currently challenging Bola Tinubu’s victory before the Presidential Election Tribunal Court (PEPC), urging the tribunal to issue an order directing INEC to present him with a certificate of return as the duly elected president of Nigeria.
As it stands, parties are still waiting for the date when the Tribunal will decide the fate of the three leading candidates in the last presidential election.
