This suspension comes as a result of an incident on May 13, where Morant posed with a firearm inside a car during a live-streamed video. It is worth noting that this occurrence transpired less than two months after Morant received an eight-game suspension without pay for a separate incident on March 4. During that incident, he live-streamed a video in which he displayed a firearm while being visibly intoxicated at a nightclub in the Denver area.
Upon investigating the May 13 incident, the league office concluded that Morant intentionally and prominently exhibited a gun while inside a vehicle, accompanied by several individuals, as they departed a social gathering in Memphis. It was determined that Morant knowingly allowed himself to be recorded and live-streamed on Instagram Live while handling the firearm, despite his prior commitments to the NBA and public assurances that he would not engage in similar conduct again. On May 16, Morant released a statement accepting full responsibility for his actions.
The suspension is effective immediately and will encompass the first 25 games of the upcoming 2023-24 NBA regular season, during which Morant is eligible and able to play. Additionally, Morant will need to fulfill specific requirements before he can resume playing and will be prohibited from participating in any public league or team activities, including preseason games, throughout the duration of his suspension.
