Over 350 Christians Murdered in Imo, Plateau and other States in 18 days – Civil Society Group Alleges

Over 350 Christians have been slaughtered in 18 days by suspected Fulani herders, bandits, and the military in certain towns in Plateau, Imo, and other states, according to the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety).

The group claimed that between June 12 and June 30, 2023, 120 killings of Christians were documented in Plateau, 100 in Imo, and 130 in other locations throughout Nigeria by suspected herdsmen, bandits, and security personnel.

In a statement, the Chairman of Intersociety, Mr. Emeka Umeagbalasi, said that 2,500 Christians had been killed by Fulani herdsmen and their allies in the first half of 2023.

He claimed that jihadist members of the Nigerian military, police, and their leaders in Eastern Nigeria “join the list of anti-Christian butchers.” They killed at least 100 helpless and unarmed Judeo-Christian orthodox Easterners, primarily in Imo State, during the course of the past 40 days, from May 21 to June 30, 2023, accounting for 30% of the total homicides.

At least 20 Christian deaths in Borno State, primarily in Christian parts of the Southern Borno, including Damboa and Chibok Local Government areas, were caused by Boko Haram and ISWAP within the same last eighteen days of June 2023.

Regarding the plight of Nigerian Christians, it is shocking and deeply disheartening to learn that the State Jihadism Project, which was carried out by the defunct central government of Retired Major General Muhammad Buhari from May 29, 2015, to May 29, 2023, continued to hunt down Christians and other non-Muslim people, including their ancestral lands, homes, places of worship, and educational institutions.

“Our overall study has revealed that since the 2009 Boko Haram rebellion, 53,750 people have been hacked to death by gruesome, State-protected, and conspiratorial Jihadist attacks, killing 31,700 helpless Christians. More than 18,200 churches, 1,000 traditional religious sites, 800 synagogues and other related buildings, and 2,200 Christian schools were discovered to have been burned down or willfully destroyed, along with 1100 Christian communities and 50 million Christians who were ejected from their native lands and forced to leave their homes.

“Thousands of non-menopausal Christian women have been raped, sexually assaulted, or sold into slavery, while hundreds of thousands of Christians have been forcibly converted to Islam. In Benue State alone, at least 2.5 million Christians have been forced into internal or regional/international border homelessness, according to Umeagbalasi, he also stated that at least 15 million Christian IDPs and refugees have been created.
