The police in Zaria, Kaduna State, have arrested 13 suspects who allegedly belong to a cult group and a robbery gang. The suspects were apprehended on Sunday after they attacked and robbed some residents of the Sabon-Gari area.
According to the acting spokesman of the police in the state, ASP Mansir Hassan, the suspects confessed to being members of the “Eiye” Confraternity. He said they came from different tertiary institutions across the country and chose Zaria as their meeting point for initiation rituals.
Hassan said the suspects were armed with machetes and other dangerous weapons when they stormed Sabon-Gari, breaking into houses and injuring the occupants. He said the police received a distress call and quickly mobilized to the scene.
He said the police operatives chased the suspects into a nearby forest, where they had their hideout. He said 13 of them were arrested, while others escaped. He said the police recovered some weapons and items stolen from the victims.
Hassan said the suspects were cooperating with the police in their investigation and efforts to arrest the remaining members of the gang. He urged the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious movement or activity to the police.
