Renewed Shege: Air Ticket Skyrockets By 34.06%

Under APC and the rulership of the occupant of Aso Rock, widely recognized by well-meaning Nigerians to be ‘INEC-select’, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigerians have continued to face a continuous surge in the cost of air travel, as average ticket prices have seen a significant increase of 34.06% in one year.

According to the latest report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the airfare for Nigerians rose from N55,906.86 in May 2022 to N74,948.78 in May 2023.


Also, commuter bus fares have also experienced an 11.66% increase during the same period. These escalating transportation expenses pose significant challenges for Nigerian travelers and commuters.

The NBS data on transport fares cover various modes of transportation, including bus journeys within the city per drop on a constant route, intercity bus journeys charged per person, airfares for specified routes on a single journey, motorcycle (Okada) journeys per drop, and waterway passenger transport.

The report states, “The average fare paid by commuters for bus journeys within the city per drop increased by 0.23% in May 2023, with N649.59 recorded compared to N648.12 in April 2023. On a year-on-year basis, the average fare paid rose by 11.66% from N581.79 in May 2022.”

Furthermore, the report reveals that “the average fare paid by commuters for intercity bus journeys per drop in May 2023 was N4,002.16, indicating a 0.19% increase compared to the N3,994.51 recorded in April 2023. On a year-on-year basis, this represents a 9.09% increase from N3,668.64 in May 2022.”

Regarding air travel, the NBS noted that the average fare paid by air passengers for specified routes and single journeys increased by 0.002% from N74,947.30 in April 2023 to N74,948.78 in May 2023. Furthermore, on a year-on-year basis, the fare rose by 34.06% from N55,906.86 in May 2022.

The report also highlights the increase in Okada transportation fares, stating that “the average fare paid for Okada transportation in May 2023 was N464.55, which represents a 0.49% increase from the rate recorded in April 2023 (N462.29).” It further adds that Okada fares rose by 11.30% when compared with the value in May 2022, which was N417.39.
