Toyota, a leading Japanese carmaker, has announced a breakthrough in battery technology that could revolutionize the electric car industry, making it more accessible and practical. Toyota’s solid-state batteries feature rapid charging capabilities, capable of reaching 80% charge in just 15 minutes. The batteries have been engineered to withstand 1,000 charging cycles, equivalent to approximately 10 years of typical use. While other automakers, including Volkswagen, BMW, Hyundai, and Nissan, are also investing in solid-state battery technology, Toyota claims to have overcome significant technical challenges. One such challenge is the formation of dendrites, tiny metal filaments that can cause short circuits and fires.
Toyota has patented a new method of coating the electrodes with a thin film that prevents dendrite growth, enhancing the safety and reliability of their solid-state batteries. Additionally, Toyota has resolved issues related to scaling up production, which requires more intricate manufacturing processes compared to lithium-ion batteries. The company has developed an innovative approach to stacking battery cells, simplifying the assembly process and reducing the number of components required.
