A gold, ruby and diamond crown ring worn by rap legend Tupac Shakur during his last public appearance sold for $1 million at auction in New York on July 25, 2023.
The winning bid was well above Sotheby’s pre-sale estimate of between $200,000 and $300,000 and becomes the most valuable hip-hop artifact ever sold, the auction house said.
The ring was part of a collection of hip-hop memorabilia that included items from the Notorious B.I.G., Salt-N-Pepa, and Wu-Tang Clan. The collection also featured a handwritten letter from Shakur to his high school sweetheart, which sold for $75,600.
Shakur was shot and killed in Las Vegas in 1996 at the age of 25. His murder remains unsolved. The rapper’s music and influence continue to be celebrated more than two decades after his death.
