The U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken has called President-Elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In a press release, Blinken called on the incoming administration to provide inclusive governance for all Nigerians and reiterated the need for the United States and Nigeria to continue to strengthen business relationships and collaborations based on shared interests.
The statement reads “Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke this morning with Nigerian President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu to emphasize his continued commitment to further strengthening the U.S.-Nigeria relationship with the incoming administration. The Secretary noted that the U.S.-Nigeria partnership is built on shared interests and strong people-to-people ties and that those links should continue strengthening under President-elect Tinubu’s tenure. Secretary Blinken and President-elect Tinubu discussed the importance of inclusive leadership that represents all Nigerians, continued comprehensive security cooperation, and reforms to support economic growth”
It will be recalled that the State Department had earlier issued a press release affirming the United States support for strengthening democracy in Nigeria by placing visa restrictions on unnamed individuals who undermined the 2023 general elections that got Tinubu elected.
